Grayson rode up to the front of the Jones house, Julian right behind him. He jumped to the ground, crunching gravel under his boot heels, and tossed Verne’s reins to the ranch hand standing there, waiting.

“Hello, Charlie. Is Mr. Jones busy, or would I be able to speak to him for a few minutes.”

“This time of day, you’ll most likely find him in his office,” Charlie answered, looking concerned. “I know it’s probably none of my business, but is everything alright? You look awfully serious this morning.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Grayson grinned. “I didn’t mean to cause you alarm. I was just thinking a little too hard. My business is important, but not serious in the detrimental sense.”

“Oh, that sounds fine,” Charlie nodded, taking the reins for Julian’s horse, as well. “Just let yourselves in, or knock, either one. I’m sure Teresa will hear you either way and lead you to him. That woman hears everything. She’s amazing.”

Grayson just gave the man a huge grin and headed up the porch steps to open the door. Once both he and Julian were inside with the door closed behind them, they stopped and waited only a few seconds before Teresa appeared in the door to the receiving room. “Hello, Master Grayson. Master Julian,” she said, bowing her head. “How are you fine gentlemen doing today?”

“Well, things aren’t going too bad, today,” Grayson smiled. “How are you doing?”

“Not bad,” she grinned back.

“You’re looking very lovely today, Miss Teresa,” Julian added with a huge smile of his own.

The young woman just shook her head at him. “You know, Master Julian, you don’t have to flatter me to get a piece of pie?”

He gave her an even bigger grin. “Well, it’s not just flattery. You really are looking very lovely today. I would like a piece of that pie, though.”

She just laughed, stepping back to direct them down the hall. “I’m guessing you’re here to see Master Jones. You’ll find both he and Master Steven in his office.”

“Thank you, Miss Teresa,” Julian said with a tip of his hat as he passed by her.

Grayson waited till he heard the door close behind his cousin, before speaking. “So, Miss Teresa, are you ever going to tell the Jones men who you really are?”

“Master Grayson, I don’t know what you could possibly mean,” she said, placing her hand over her heart, feigning confusion. She done such a good job, she might have fooled him, if not for the twinkle of knowledge he saw in her eyes. That, and the fact that his bear could smell the lie, and her magic.

“You know what I mean, Miss Teresa. I know what you are, just as much as you know what I am.”

She turned her eyes away, staring at the wall. Her cheeks flushed, and he noticed the tears in her eye. “I don’t know if they will be able to handle knowing what I am.”

“I think the chance is better than good, they will do just fine.”

“How sure of that
